Trump moves to crack down on China trade practices

Trump to take executive action into China's trade practices

In an editorial, the official China Daily said it was critical the Trump administration doesn't make a rash decision it will regret. Despite Beijing's support for tougher United Nations sanctions on Pyongyang, Trump appears to be getting frustrated with the lack of progress. But so far, the United States has not imposed heavier trade measures on Chinese goods.

China's policy of forcing foreign companies to turn over technology to Chinese joint venture partners and failure to crack down on intellectual property theft have been longstanding problems for USA administrations.

While Beijing has promised to open more industries to foreign companies, it also has issued new rules on electric vehicle manufacturing, data security, internet censorship and other fields.

Some experts say the wording of the memorandum is watered down, reflecting how high a priority North Korea is for the administration. "We will engage in a thorough investigation and, if needed, take action to preserve the future of USA industry", a statement said.

The forced sharing of intellectual property with Chinese firms has been a long-standing concern of the US business community, with reports suggesting that losses stemming from it could total hundreds of billions of dollars annually that cost the USA economy millions of jobs.

The war of words has sparked global concern, with world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping urging calm on both sides in a phone call with Trump over the weekend.

Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou replaces Wu Dawei, who retired as China's top negotiator in the six-party talks that have been on hold since North Korea withdrew from them in 2009.

That's the clear message from Beijing on Monday as Trump prepares to order a probe into alleged China trade abuses, such as the theft of intellectual property from American firms.

Last week, President Trump said he was ready to unleash "fire and fury" if North Korea continued to threaten the United States.

Trump routinely slams China's trade practices, and blames China for the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs. According to the Washington Post, Lighthizer will likely investigate China, which could result in the president receiving broad authority to punish what has been portrayed as an economic competitor overseas. Trump wants to lower the deficit.

Dr Peter Navarro, the director of the White House National Trade Council, is a long-time critic of Chinese trade practices.
