Social Media Shows Scenes following Tree Fall in Central Park

A courageous Manhattan mom was critically injured trying to shield her infant and two tots from a massive tree that suddenly crashed down on them during a stroll through Central Park on Tuesday, witnesses and authorities said.

The family was walking along West Drive near West 62nd St when witnesses say they heard the terrifying noise of the tree fall. According to a release by the New York City Parks Department, crews have been called out to Central Park to investigate the incident and to remove the tree. "I have a son the same age as the 2 year old, so it was definitely heart-breaking to see this", mounted police officer Megan O'Leary said.

The tree fell near Central Park South and East 59th Street, officials said.

Emergency workers took her and the three children to the hospital.

"I think she had three kids".

A Dodge Challenger was traveling south on 4 Street at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a sedan headed south on 4 Street. Fields, who is now being held without bail, escaped the scene of the accident but was eventually tracked down by police.

The mother, her two little boys and her baby were transported to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. The kids were pulled out from under branches; they were crying, but otherwise appeared to be OK, the witness said.

Mom-of-three Anne Monoky Goldman broke her neck in the horror, while her 2-year-old son, Grant, suffered a fractured skull, a relative said. "She was talking when she went into the ambulance, they had to go and chainsaw her out, and they put her in the ambulance and she was talking".

The tree blocking one of the roads in the park and the NYPD told drivers to avoid the area. On Twitter, Mr. Phillips said that one person was in critical condition, the others "possibly serious".

The four have non-life threatening injuries and have been transported to a local hospital, officials added. It's not clear why the tree fell.
