Houston and NRG Stadium are on an official list for cities and venues that may be considered to host a FIFA World Cup match if the event comes to North America in 2026.

A complete list of the cities being considered can be found here.

The United Bid Committee of Canada, Mexico and the United States released a list of 49 potential venues in 44 cities on Tuesday. Numbers dipped to around 23,000 per game in 2016, when the event was hosted by the less soccer-crazed Japan, but TV viewership remained strong: Millions of people watch at least part of the worldwide competition each year.

Cities that want to be considered for the bid must express formal interest to the committee by September 5.

The United Bid committee will shortlist cities for inclusion in the bid next month before submitting the North American proposal in March 2018. Still, the USSF says it's large enough to host a group stage match - just not the opener or the final.

'Venezuelan opposition leader Lopez returned to house arrest'
He has singled out opposition legislator and former student leader Freddy Guevara as among the first he would have arrested . At least one person died and another was injured in the attack, says El Pais .

FedEx Field, the Washington Redskins' suburban home, is listed as the proposed D.C. area stadium.

The Washington area would have a strong case to host men's World Cup matches in 2026. The minimum requirement is 40,000 seats.

According to Canada Soccer, cities have been asked to provide an overview of transportation infrastructure, past experience hosting major sporting events, available accommodations, venues and other relevant information.

Federation Internationale de Football Association 2026 will be the first to feature an expanded field of 48 teams and, if the tournament is award to North America, 10 matches will be held in Canada.

That recipe hasn't always spared New Orleans painful snubs lately, with the city losing out on the rights to host future Super Bowls in 2014 and 2016 at the Superdome. "We have had a great response so far and we're looking forward to working closely with each city and determining the best venues for our official bid that we'll submit next year".
