Prominent White Supremacist Richard Spencer Schedules Potential Event At The University Of Florida

Texas A&M University and the University of Florida, the two colleges where white nationalist Richard Spencer was scheduled to speak in the coming weeks, have canceled Spencer's planned appearance over safety concerns after this weekend's deadly rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Spencer is a leader in the "alt-right" movement, blamed for a deadly outburst following a "Unite the Right" rally Saturday in Charlottesville that left one person dead after a auto plowed into a group of counter-protesters.

Soon after, Fuchs announced the request made for Spencer to speak on campus.

Janine Sikes, a UF spokeswoman, said this is the first time that officials can recall the university denying such a request due to fears of violence or hate speech.

Spencer's "Unite the Right" protest in Charlottesville, Virginia began Friday night with a tiki-torch-lit procession to the confederate monument near the University of Virginia campus, Spencer's alma mater. That event was co-hosted by NPI and Bristow's newly minted Foundation for the Marketplace of Ideas and the white nationalist group Identity Europa. "As our record shows, this university does not determine who can access public spaces based on what they think or say", she said. The event was expected to feature Spencer as a guest speaker.

On Tuesday, Texas A&M University canceled a similar rally scheduled to take place on its campus September 11.

"It's a good reason", Choper said.

UF History student Ebony Love, 21, said the fight is not over and the community must stay vigilant.

"I want to make sure everyone is safe", Scott said Tuesday, according to the Tampa newspaper.

U.S. Chief District Judge W. Keith Watkins found that Auburn didn't provide enough evidence that Spencer's speech was likely to incite violence. But the professor to whom Spencer reached out had no interest int the alt-right figurehead's request.

"Instead of allowing hateful speech to tear us down, I urge our campus community to join together, respect one another and promote positive speech, while allowing for differing opinions".

Mr Spencer is President of the National Policy Institute, a think tank that focuses on what it calls the "dispossession of White Americans".

Heimbach, who said he was pepper-sprayed during the melee in Charlottesville, called the event Saturday "an absolute stunning victory" for the far right because of the large number of supporters who descended on the city to decry plans to remove a statue of Lee.

"Generally when we're talking about shutting down speech because of threats of violence, it has to be an imminent threat of violence that is also likely to occur", Shibley said.

The university allows groups like Spencer's to rent space on campus if they cover rental expenses and security costs.
