Guardiola's Man City have £18m Evans bid rejected

Manchester City have initial £18 million bid rejected for West Brom defender Jonny Evans

Guardiola's opening gambit of £18m plus add-ons was turned down and the message from the Hawthorns is very clear: Evans is not for sale.

Evans has two years left to run on his current deal at the Baggies.

31 appearances in the league last season, Evans has been one of the first names on the team sheet whenever fit and available. Pep wanted a cheap, experienced, homegrown player who is Premier League proven.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has his eyes firmly fixed on a former Manchester United defender. A year on, Evans' value has risen, but in the current insane transfer market, it is understandable why Guardiola could see him as a viable option. But it would surely be too good an opportunity for him to turn down and a chance to show former United boss Louis van Gaal that he was wrong to let him go.

The Frenchman has been training with the Blues in recent weeks and is now with the first-team squad in Girona, but is only considered a temporary option while other options are pursued.

Leicester City forward Islam Slimani (L) fights for the ball with defender Jonny Evans (R) during the Premier League Asia Trophy match.

The Spaniard is thought to be keen on a deal for the centre-back, but faces fierce competition for places with opposite number Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones to contend with at the Etihad this term.

Evans, still nursing a hamstring injury suffered during pre-season, did not feature for West Brom last weekend as Pulis' side began the 2017-18 Premier League season on home soil.

It has been said that the Baggies have rejected a bid from Leicester City for the defender, but an offer of £25 million (R424 million) from City might be too hard to turn down.

Eliaquim Mangala is not in favour at City, and has been linked with Inter Milan.
