Censure Statues Hearings Congress Weighs Response to Trump Remarks Digital Editor Aug 17 2017 State and Local

Congress has become skilled at distancing itself from President Donald Trump, but some are urging elected officials to go beyond tweets and press releases in response to the president's comments about last weekend's violence in Virginia when they return from recess in September.

Pelosi said in a statement that Bannon's departure "doesn't disguise where President Trump himself stands on white supremacists and the bigoted beliefs they advance".

In the most explosive example, a group of Democrats unveiled legislation to censure President Donald Trump for failing to adequately condemn white supremacist groups and for blaming "both sides" for violence at the rally. The Democrats have linked Trump's defense of some of the white supremacist marchers to the influence of Bannon and other nationalist voices in the White House. Heather Heyer was struck and killed by a vehicle driven, police allege, by one of the rally's attendants.

In the violence prompted by a march organized by neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacists, Nazi sympathizer James Alex Fields Jr.is accused of ramming his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters.

Contending that Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville was "outrageous" and "unacceptable", the Worcester Democrat said America's leaders must send a clear message that such comments aren't just wrong, but "insult the moral convictions and ideals our country was built on".

'US Not Closer to War with N. Korea Than a Week Ago'
President Donald Trump has offered fiery warnings for North Korea, saying that the U.S. military was "locked and loaded". When asked if further escalation would warrant military action, McMaster said it "depends on the nature of the threat".

Only three presidents in history have been censured, all prior to the 20th century: Andrew Jackson, John Tyler, and James Buchanan.

The resolution censures the president for his perceived misconduct, as well as calls on him to fire "any and all White House advisors who have urged him to cater to the white supremacist movement in the United States". The House censured him for starting the Mexican-American War. Jerrold Nadler of New York, Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey, is co-sponsored by 79 other Democratic members.

Considering that Republicans control the House, the censure move probably is an uphill battle.

The president accused the protesters, who rallied against neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups in Charlottesville, of being "very, very violent". "President Trump's growing record of repulsive statements is matched by his repulsive policies".

The resolution, which is unlikely to pass the Republican-held legislature, was formally introduced on Friday.
