Trump slams 'publicity seeking' Lindsey Graham for criticizing him over Charlottesville response

'Your Words are Dividing America,' Graham Tells Trump

Despite the fact that Graham is staunch legislative ally of Trump, the president can not stand verbal criticism.

When Donald Trump repeatedly refused to condemn white supremacy after the riots in Charlottesville, and blamed "both sides" for Nazi demonstrators macing, beating, and ramming unarmed protestors with a vehicle, not even Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham could make excuses for the president's moral failure.

President Trump criticized Republican senators on Thursday morning, highlighting the current divide between the Oval Office and some GOP lawmakers.

Graham had said the United States president "took a step backward" Tuesday "by again suggesting there is moral equivalency between the white supremacist neo-Nazis and KKK members who attended the Charlottesville rally" and people like Heyer.

Graham had, on Wednesday, criticized Trump's reaction to the hate group gathering in Charlottesville that claimed the life of Heather Heyer, 32, who was peacefully protesting the event when a auto rammed into a crowd on Saturday.

Graham on Wednesday released a statement that criticized Trump for dividing Americans at a time when the president should be pushing for national unity.

"He just can't forget his election trouncing", he said.

"Through his statements yesterday, President Trump took a step backward by again suggesting there is moral equivalency between the white supremacist neo-Nazis and KKK members who attended the Charlottesville rally and people like Ms".

"You had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent", Trump said.

"Many Republicans do not agree with and will fight back against the idea that the Party of Lincoln has a welcome mat out for the David Dukes of the world", Graham said.

Trump tweeted, referring to Graham.

In a separate tweet, Trump accused "the Fake News" of distorting "what I say about hate, bigotry, etc. Shame!"

Trump said during a heated Q&A with reporters in the lobby of Trump Towers on Tuesday that he was "not putting anybody on a moral plane".

"Great to see that Dr. Kelli Ward is running against Flake Jeff Flake, who is WEAK on borders, crime and a non-factor in the Senate".

After initially claiming "many sides" were responsible for the violence on Saturday, Trump did eventually denounce hate groups and racism two days later.

"I am not putting anybody on a moral plane", he said during Tuesday's chaotic press conference.

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the liberal media is not a fan of President Trump", said Trump's Alabama campaign chairman, Perry Hooper, arguing the Russian Federation investigation is driven by media obsession.
