A recently-released poll shows that voters believe the president is dividing the country.

Sixty-eight percent of those polled said they concur that Trump's "words and actions could get us accidentally involved in an global conflict".

That gathering, where 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed while peacefully protesting the hate groups that had descended on Charlottesville, caused a massive wave of outrage - but a wavering response from President Donald Trump, who first blamed violence on "many sides" and then defended some of the neo-Nazis and white-supremacists in Charlottesville as "very fine people".

The Quinnipiac poll was conducted after the rally in Charlottesville, where white nationalists clashed with counter-protesters, resulting in three deaths and at least 34 injuries. About two in 10 of them (18%) say Trump encouraged them.

Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said the events in Charlottesville, and Trump's comments about them, have fueled a perception in America that racial tensions are on the rise.

American voters disapprove 55 - 40 percent of the way the news media covers Trump, and disapprove 62 - 35 percent of the way the president talks about the media.

Further, the poll finds Trump's approval rating at 41 percent.

On the subject of tweeting, 69 percent of voters think President Trump should stop tweeting from his personal account.

Half of voters oppose removing Confederate statues from public spaces, while 39% support it, Quinnipiac reports, with support much higher (67%) among black voters.

However, 31 percent of voters said he is doing to unite the United States. Twenty-nine percent, however, disagreed with this statement.

Some 54% of voters say they trust the media more than Mr Trump " to tell you the truth about important issues".

The poll of 1,514 voters nationwide was conducted August 17-22 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
