The only thing she could say, Merkel added, is that things were now much better than a year ago "when I anxious a great deal more". Seeking a fourth term, Merkel has had to contend with loud and sustained heckling on her campaign trail from demonstrators strongly opposed to her refugee policies.

Merkel in 2015 made a decision to open the border to hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Merkel said Tuesday that it was "important and right" that Germany took in refugees and other migrants in an "exceptional situation" two years ago but it's also important to have "long-term sustainable structures".

"I know that it is very, very hard for many people but I think that Greece will also benefit from more jobs and then gradually from more prosperity", she said.

Merkel said that a different clause in the refugee deal that provided for visa exemptions for Turkish citizens entering the European Union could not be implemented at the moment, as Europe's condition that Turkey amend its terrorism laws in exchange for the visa liberalization process had not been met.

"I could also imagine a (combined) economy and finance minister", she said, adding that this could allow for better coordination on budget and economic policies. With Federal elections to be held next month, Mrs. Merkel is keen to look like she has control of the migrant issue.

"The last four years of the Kohl era was a period of stagnation and political agony", he added. Her mother had migrated from Ghana to Germany.

Despite TDP winning Nandyal bypoll, Brahmananda Reddy can still be disqualified
Telugu Desam Party member Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy is leading with 13000 votes against the opposition party YSRCP. Many media channels are conducting live programs with the party members to review the Nandyal election results.

The checks were first introduced in response to the worst refugee crisis since World War II, which saw a record number of refugees flood into Europe from Syria, as well as other Middle Eastern countries and Africa.

"This requires patience with people's concerns and the attempt to address them repeatedly with concrete solutions to specific problems", said Merkel, who is also the candidate of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for the next chancellery.

Opposition has been particularly staunch in her home region in former communist east Germany.

"For sure, those Germans who do not want to put up with a nuclear storehouse in their homeland and get involved in the next adventures of their transatlantic partner might be attracted by the promises of Martin Schulz, who is building his campaign on anti-American rhetoric", the analyst noted.

"You have to live with it", Merkel said of the protests.

The sheer scare of refugees accepted by Ms Merkel's government led to a large backlog of asylum applications.
