Graphic eyewitness footage has emerged of Rohingya Muslims allegedly killed while fleeing state violence in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state.

Either way, it is the bloodiest chapter yet in a bitter five-year crisis that has torn apart Rakhine state along ethnic and religious lines, displaced the Rohingya in huge numbers and heaped worldwide condemnation on Myanmar s army and the government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Following deadly attacks by Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), militants at security posts on August 25 and reports of Myanmar's security forces' subsequent response, the escalation in tensions has resulted in thousands reportedly fleeing their homes.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard and Bangladesh Police in a combined operation rescued the bodies early yesterday after Subrang Union Parishad Member Nurul Amin informed them about the accident.

Alongside the Rohingya Muslims, over 400 Hindus from Maungdaw made it to Bangladesh yesterday through Rezu Amtola of Ukhia amid attacks by an "unidentified armed group".

"They didn't know how to swim, so they died", Saddique said.

Since then thousands of Rohingyas - not recognised by the Myanmar government - crossed the border to flee violence.

Photographs from the scene showed the bodies of several small children lined up on the ground, covered with sheets.

He also noted with appreciation the efforts of Bangladeshi authorities to meet the "dire needs" of those crossing the border.

"These regular farmers-turned-fighters with few weapons will bring nothing but more woe to Rohingya Muslims", said one prominent Rohingya leader who requested anonymity.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government said last month it was going to expel all Rohingya in India, even those 14,000 who have registered with the United Nations refugee agency.

In 2012, 10 Rohingya men were killed after three Rohingya were accused of raping and murdering a Buddhist woman.

The group, all Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, were found washed up on the shore on Thursday by villagers from Shah Porir Dwip island in Bangladesh, a short distance from the mouth of the Naf river that separates the two countries. In total, 14 people survived, but "young children and those women couldn't swim and they couldn't be saved", she said, looking over the bodies lined up on the beach.
