Pitt controlled the football, but James Franklin liked the final score

Pittsburgh Panthers vs Penn State Nittany Lions

Pittsburgh Panthers vs Penn State Nittany Lions

When the Penn State Nittany Lions took the field at Beaver Stadium to face off against the Pitt Panthers for the 98th time in program history, they were out for blood.

Last November, Princeton ended the Nittany Lions' season earlier than they had hoped, upsetting Penn State 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

However, Franklin's words take on a different context in this particular rivalry, because Penn State has shown no inclination to extend it beyond the now schedule four-year run.

Is there any doubt this rivalry is on? The Penn State defense smothered Akron with 14 tackles for loss and held them to 159 yards of total offense. "This win is no more significant than last week".

"We were able to get a win, and that's what it was for us, guys", Penn State's head coach said.

Penn State never looked back after that touchdown, which opened an 18-point margin. Pitt had serious issues covering Youngstown State running backs in the passing game in the opener, and Penn State loves to find ways to get Barkley the ball in space.

While Nittany Lion fans could be disappointed about the current spot in the poll, college football rankings are very fluid and change from week to week.

"It was definitely a really good atmosphere and a tough atmosphere to play in Pittsburgh in an away situation", Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley said.

Pittsburgh pulled off the upset in 2016 by defeating the Nittany Lions 42-39, and it seems Franklin noted the Panthers celebration.

"I think they took it too far".

The teams haven't met in Beaver Stadium since 1999. "I don't know which underwear I wore for that game for the superstitious part", he said. Suffice to say, neither of them are talking about why they agreed to renew the rivalry. We want to be a balanced team.

He threw the first of two touchdown passes to tight end Mike Gesicki after Grant Haley's interception four plays into the game, then found Gesicki for a 10-yard TD on the Lions' third possession.

McSorley's 36-yard carry in the first quarter was the longest rush of his career. The first touchdown required eight seconds and came on McSorley's eight-yard pass on first and goal to Gesicki with 12:53 left in the first quarter.

It's the kind of thing that proves that Pitt and Penn State are, in fact the thing that Franklin is attempting to assure you that they are not: rivals.
