An official of the fire department told the AFP that 23 students and two wardens had lost their lives.

"It was not from a short circuit". "We are investigating the cause of the fire", observed, for its part, the Centre" s director of fire and rescue Kuala Lumpur, Khirudin Drahman. "But the forensics team will look at every aspect". The victims are trapped inside the room when the fire broke out high. They had to break through the grilles. "Every Thursday evening, we would take them for Yaasin recital programmes, we also celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Aidiladha together".

Firefighters rushed to the scene and the fire was out within an hour but it wreaked awful devastation.

Local media showed pictures of blackened bunk bed frames in the burned dormitory.

The fire broke out at an Islamic religious school named Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah, which had been operating without a license.

The fire broke out near the only door to the boys' dormitory, trapping the victims, fire department senior official Abu Obaidat Mohamad Saithalimat said.

Fourteen students managed to get out, and seven are being treated in hospital. "My son really cares for his friends as he is one of the oldest students at the school", she said, sobbing.
