Egyptian President Urges Palestianians to 'Co-Exist' With Israelis

Sisi tells Netanyahu he wants to assist Israeli Palestinian peace efforts

According to sources in the meeting who spoke to Ha'arez, the Egyptian president expressed optimism about the Trump administration's efforts to renew the "peace process", and reassured US Jews that Egypt was interested in helping.

Netanyahu met with Sisi in January of 2016 in the Aqaba Summit, a secret summit meeting in which Jordanian King Abdullah II and US Secretary of State John Kerry also participated, in order to discuss efforts to try and move ahead with the so-called "peace process" again but the meeting did not result in any progress in the "political process".

The hour-and-a-half-long meeting took place at the Palace Hotel, where the Egyptian president was staying.

Sisi emphasised the importance of "resuming negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian sides to reach a comprehensive solution", the presidency said.

Monday's meeting, which follows mediation in Cairo between Palestinian arch-rivals Fatah and Hamas, reflects Egypt's will to return to the forefront of the Middle East diplomatic scene. They have, though, met in private - in Aqaba in January 2016 and in Cairo later previous year.

Toys 'R' Us files for bankruptcy ahead of the holiday season
Toys "R" Us has $4.9bn in debt, $400mn of which has interest payments due in 2018, with a further $1.7bn due to be repaid in 2019. Toys "R" Us is building inventory for the holiday season and fourth quarter, which accounts for 40 percent of net sales.

But that relationship has been tested since the July 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and the subsequent bloody crackdown on Morsi's supporters.

However, on the same day, Trump's administration issued a damning report on human rights in Sisi's Egypt, condemning detentions, disappearances and reports of extrajudicial executions in the country.

Trump has described peace between Israelis and Palestinians as "the ultimate deal". The objective is "to reach a just solution based on the principle of the two-state solution and global decisions".

Let's hope that Sisi's message is taken to heart.

"The meeting (between Netanyahu and Sisi) represents a public step to further coordinate with Israel on a host of issues, from containing the Islamic State in the Sinai [and] reining in Hamas in the Gaza Strip, to trying to stem the tide of Iranian influence in the region", professor Joshua Teitelbaum, a senior research fellow at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, told JNS.org.
