Nepal to sign Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Today, UN opened the first legally binding treaty to be signed, in the United Nations Headquarters in NY.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, signed on behalf of the federal government, with additional signatories from 55 other countries.

The Treaty will enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries. It will keep us on track for achieving our goal of a world in which nuclear weapons exist only in movies or books.

Speaking after the ceremony, Onyeama said Nigeria signed the treaty because right from the early 60s, Nigeria has been a strong advocate for nuclear weapons' prohibition and also, non proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The Nuclear Prohibition Treaty entails a collection of prohibitions to participate in any activities related to nuclear weapons including the prohibition of developing, testing, producing, obtaining, processing, stockpiling, using or threatening to use nuclear weapons.

The United States, the United Kingdom and France had refused to take part in the negotiation of the treaty and said they have no intention to sign it.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted [JURIST report] during a United Nations conference in July by a vote of 122 to 1.

Armed conflicts were the main reason for the displacement crises, SIPRI said in its 48th edition of its annual yearbook.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has called the treaty "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible".

Washington places an emphasis on strengthening the 50 years old Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in the context of aspirant nuclear powers, such as North Korea.

States began signing the pact Wednesday.

In a statement issued before the signing ceremony, NATO denounced the treaty, saying it "disregards the realities of the increasingly challenging security environment".

Most notably, the U.S. is expected to spend US$400 billion between 2017 and 2026 on maintaining and comprehensively updating its nuclear forces.

The UN secretary general was hopeful that the document would help bolster global efforts to eliminate weapons of mass destruction.

"Ireland is proud to have played a leadership role.in negotiating this ground-breaking treaty, which represents the successful outcome of the first multilateral disarmament negotiations in over 20 years", Coveney said in NY today. According to Costa Rica's Elayne Whyte Gomez, president of the conference: "This is a very clear statement that the worldwide community wants to move to a. security paradigm that does not include nuclear weapons".

In attendance at the signing ceremony were Japanese atomic bomb survivors and the mayor of Nagasaki. It received the support of 122 nations when it was adopted by vote in July. However, the world's nuclear powers - both official and unofficial - aren't quite as enthusiastic. The bombings of Hiroshima on August 6 of that year and Nagasaki three days later ushered in the nuclear era.

Also speaking was Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who said the organization received a cable from Hiroshima on August 30, 1945 describing a "city wiped out", a great number of dead and over 100,000 wounded. "Humanity simply can not live under the dark shadow of nuclear warfare, and the huge suffering which we all know would result". Along with the Holy See, Thailand also ratified the treaty.
