Earlier, India had announced that it plans to deport around 40,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees living illegally in India.

There were an estimated 1.1 million Rohingya in Rakhine state before the current crisis, though almost half have fled into Bangladesh where they are cramped into ill-equipped camps.

Owaisi said a majority of the Rohingyas who are in India have cards issued by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In a campaign to wipe out the armed rebels, Myanmar's military also targeted unarmed Rohingya civilians, a tactic human rights groups have described as "ethnic cleansing".

About 421,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled a Myanmar military offensive that began after a series of guerilla attacks on Aug 25 on security posts and an army camp in which about a dozen people were killed. The predominantly Buddhist Myanmar considers them Bangladeshi, but Bangladesh says they're Burmese.

The government of Myanmar has blamed terrorists for starting the recent violence that has killed more than 1,000 people, according to recent a recent estimate from Yanghee Lee, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Myanmar.

In August, an advisory commission set up by Myanmar's government to find a solution to the crisis in Rakhine State - an entity chaired by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the request of Suu Kyi - made its final recommendations, including the introduction of a system for granting citizenship to the Rohingya. We applaud the Government of Bangladesh's generosity in responding to this severe humanitarian crisis and appreciate their continued efforts to ensure assistance reaches people in need.

The minority is regarded as undocumented migrants by the Myanmar government and is deprived of access to vital state services suchas healthcare and education.

Suu Kyi has for years been feted in the West as a champion of democracy during years of military rule and house arrest but she has faced growing criticism over the plight of the Rohingya.
