Russian hackers tried to access Washington state's voting systems, officials say

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security notified the Colorado Secretary of State's office on Friday that its systems were scanned in the weeks before the 2016 election.

Trevor Timmons, chief information officer for the Colorado Secretary of State's Office, says information that a Department of Homeland Security agent passed along Friday didn't explicitly mention Russian Federation but that it otherwise mirrored a warning federal officials gave Congress over the summer that did.

Dean says both DHS and state cyber security experts say the attempt by Russian actors was a common form of surveillance scan looking for vulnerabilities in the state computer network.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin's voter registration system was unsuccessfully targeted by Russian hackers before last year's election, the Wisconsin Elections Commission said Friday.

Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator Michael Haas said the attempted hack had no effect on Wisconsin's systems or the outcome of the election. The press release said the information was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security.

Haas says security provided by the state successfully protected Wisconsin's systems.

Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes.

Washington state uses the updated software and "best practices and security measures" to try to ensure honest elections, she said. Republican Gov. Scott Walker is expected to seek a third term and Democratic U.S. Sen.
