Obamacare repeal bill in doubt in Senate as key Republicans' concerns deepen

Sen. John McCain R-Ariz. on Capitol Hill in July

John McCain (R-AZ) to oppose a last-ditch GOP proposal to overhaul the Obama health law, Republicans have nearly run out of time to make substantive changes to Obamacare by a September 30 deadline for action under a special expedited procedure that did not allow for a Senate filibuster, again dealing the President and GOP leaders a bitter defeat on an issue they've campaigned on for the last seven years.

Senator Susan Collins, who just two days ago said she was "leaning against" the legislation, on Sunday declared in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union": "It is very hard for me to envision a scenario where I would end up voting for this bill". "They took our edits and then a day later they removed our edits", Cruz said. All Democrats oppose the measure, so "no" votes from three of the 52 GOP senators would kill the party's effort to deliver on its perennial promise to repeal "Obamacare". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a close friend of McCain's and co-author of the bill that appears to be the last gasp effort by Republicans this year to try to repeal and replace Obamacare. They face a September 30 deadline, at which point special rules that prevent a Democratic filibuster will expire.

But the Brookings Institution said on Friday that the Graham-Cassidy bill could leave at least 21 million fewer Americans with health insurance by 2020 to 2026.

A showdown vote would have to occur this week to give Republicans any shot at reversing their debacle on the issue in July, when the GOP-run Senate rejected their initial attempt to dismantle Obama's law.

Paul says the bill would keep most "Obamacare" spending and reshuffle the money into block grants that would set up "a perpetual food fight" among states over the formula.

The Graham-Cassidy bill would take the funds used for subsidies and the expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare and transfer them to states in block grants, phasing out the funds completely by 2027.

"Obamacare is collapsing in Arizona, South Carolina, and across the nation - driving up premiums and reducing choices", he continued.

Johnson has said those protections drive up the cost of coverage for the healthy. We already have a problem under the Affordable Care Act with the cost of premiums and deductibles. The same analysis shows other states would lose ground.

FBI Wiretapped Trump Campaign Chair Manafort Beginning in 2014
Manafort 68, is a longtime GOP operative who has previous working experience with former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Reportedly attorneys for both Trump and Manafort put a halt to any further communications between the two earlier this year.

Despite Trump's tweets, efforts to pass Graham-Cassidy by the end of the month have stalled. But he said at a Texas Tribune Festival event Sunday, "Right now, they don't have my vote and I don't think they have Mike Lee's vote either".

"Cruz says he doesn't think Utah GOP Sen". But the two are some of the most conservative senators, and are likely to share Sen. A third would be enough to defeat the bill. It keeps numerous law's taxes intact, for example, rather than rolling them back wholesale.

As a researcher in cancer prevention and control, I believe the Senate's Graham-Cassidy bill would be a disaster for public health.

Still, the bill's sponsors remain optimistic.

Paul criticized the GOP bill anew as "not repeal". Bill Cassidy, R-La.

The bill's namesakes, Sens.

"Rand Paul objects to the taxes", he said. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who voted against the last repeal bill, is also uncertain about backing the bill.
