The agency's spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said Tuesday that evacuees are spread across more than 370 locations on the island and their numbers are continuing to rise.

"Chances of an eruption are high, but we can't say when", he said.

Thousands of evacuees are living in temporary shelters, sports centres, village halls and with relatives or friends.

More than 1,000 people died when Mount Agung last erupted in 1963.

Videos circulating on social media that purport to show the mountain already violently erupting are hoaxes; they show previous eruptions from other volcanoes in Indonesia.

Bali's Mount Agung is experiencing unprecedented levels of seismic activity and could erupt in a "matter of hours", Indonesia's volcanology centre has confirmed. We don't know what to expect such as earth tremors and earthquakes which we have been told to expect.

President Joko Widodo is to visit the displaced persons at evacuation centers on Tuesday, the official said. It said shallow tremors were detected late August, and first raised the alert from "normal" to the second-tier "vigilant" level on September 14, reports the BBC.

But Spanish tourist Jordi Portalo, 23, who is visiting the beaches in the Nusa Dua area, said he was unperturbed by the rumbling volcano.

Miller held on to third, 0.658s slower than Marquez but fractionally up on Yamaha poleman Maverick Vinales in fourth place. The wounded nine-time champion battled for the lead early in the race but understandably faded to finish back in fifth.

"Mount Agung is one of many similar volcanoes in Indonesia and the ring of fire surrounding the Pacific and eastern Indian oceans", he wrote.

More than 35,000 people have been evacuated and a travel warning has been issued, with any eruption set to disrupt flights to and from the island.

As the volcano becomes more and more active, hundreds of small earthquakes are created by the magma rising up through cracks in the Earth's crust.

"This morning we were anxious because we had limited rice supply, but now we have received more rice stocks from donors", Subandi said.

Bali's Ngurah Rai global airport, which is about 76km from the volcano, remains open, with flights running as normal on Tuesday.

But several countries, including the US, the United Kingdom and Australia, have warned their citizens against traveling to Bali in case of an eruption.

Virgin Australia said it would be making an extra fuel stop in Darwin for some of its flights between Australia and Bali in case it is forced to turn back.
