Man City confirms Mendy has ruptured knee ligament

City boss Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday night: "I think it is going to be a major setback".

After an explosive start to their new campaign, Manchester City have had a dismal week following two serious injuries to the first team squad.

Mendy has made five appearances in all competitions for City in 2017-18, providing one assist.

The 23-year-old French global, signed for £50 million ($67 million) from Monaco in the summer, will undergo surgery in Barcelona on Friday on the injury he suffered in last weekend's victory over Crystal Palace.

Tests have now confirmed he has ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

City said on their website (www.mancity.com) that the player had travelled to Barcelona to see a specialist, after initial tests in Manchester, with the results on Thursday confirming the extent of the injury.

He wrote, "Bad news guys".

Guardiola suggested on Monday that Mendy still had a chance of featuring in the midweek Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk, but the defender was actually pictured on crutches at the game.

Guardiola spent big on bringing vibrant fullbacks to City in the summer, with right back Kyle Walker also joining from Tottenham Hotspur, and it has had the desired effect, adding a different dimension to the City attack.

According to the Mirror, City will now delve into the January transfer market to find a left back in Mendy's absence - with fears growing that his recovery could keep him out until the end of the season.
