Almost 50,000 people have fled the volcano region, with experts saying an eruption is imminent.

Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level status for Mt. Agung in Bali to level 4, the highest classification, signifying the possibility of a volcanic eruption.

Mount Agung's eruption ni 1963 was one of the most powerful eruptions ever recorded and resulted in thousands killed. (AP) Authorities are also preparing ferries to help people leave Bali in case air travel is disrupted, Karya said.

The Indonesian disaster agency's 134,200 figure is more than double the population of the 12km exclusion zone around the mountain, but people from further afield are leaving too.

Government officials estimate there are at least 30,000 cows within a 12-km danger zone, efforts to relocate them are ongoing as these animals are important to the residents.

The archipelago of thousands of islands, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire, ' an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

The mountain, 72 kilometers (45 miles) to the northeast of the tourist hotspot of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Data indicate that Mount Agung experienced over 1,000 small earthquakes this week.

A natural disaster has been declared in parts of Bali with fears the island's largest volcano could erupt at anytime.

The airport in Bali's capital Denpasar, through which millions of foreign tourists pass every year, has not been affected, but several countries including Australia and Singapore have issued a travel advisory.

There is already a comprehensive plan in place to divert flights to 10 other airports across Indonesia, should ash and volcanic gases interrupt scheduled flight plans.
