Although Trudeau officials were confident Trump would mostly target Mexico as the three nations started to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, Washington has slapped duties on Canadian Bombardier airliners and lumber exports in recent months and talked tough on dairy and wine. This week the influential US Chamber of Commerce warned it was time to "ring alarm bells" over the NAFTA talks.

Besides aiming to clinch a USA trade deal or forming some new trade grouping, some British supporters of Brexit have pondered joining an existing trade alliance such as NAFTA.

The figure is dwarfed by their trade with the U.S.: more than $480 billion past year for Mexico and more than $540 billion for Canada. "Nafta has benefited millions of people and can benefit millions more", Trudeau said, although he added that Nafta could use a "much-needed upgrade". Replying to a question, Trump said he would consider a trade pact with Canada minus Mexico, adding that both the U.S. and Canada wanted to protect their workers.

While speaking with members of the press, Trump said that "We may or may not be able to make that deal" when asked about the possibility of coming to an agreement with both Mexico and Canada.

"The clear focus was that we have to send a message to all the different constituencies about how much of an error it would be to cancel NAFTA, or make a bad NAFTA", Vogel said in an interview with Reuters.

The top US business group pledged to fight to preserve the pact, a congressional committee said it was committed to successful talks, and Mexico signaled it can live without the accord.

Canadian Finance Minister William Morneau said today that he was optimistic for a new deal on North American trade, calling negotiations an "opportunity for improvement".

The late game in that Group saw Greece come from a goal down to beat Cyprus 2-1 and go second in the group with a game to go. The team now looks to seal the deal at home when they play Belarus on Tuesday at the Stade de France in Paris.

The rules of origin demands are among several conditions that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has labeled "poison pill proposals" that threaten to torpedo the talks. Scheduled talks in this session have been extended by two days to Tuesday.

The Chamber and the trade group for Mexico's auto industry already have come out against an anticipated proposal to raise USA -specific content.

Mexico and Canada do some $20 billion a year in bilateral trade.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau, in Washington for meetings with G20 finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund, was confronted Thursday with several questions about a possible US exit from NAFTA. But he said Canada had to "be ready for anything" if the attempts to modernise the 23-year-old deal faltered.

"It's going to continue as we figure out new rules, there is going to be some friction", he said on the sidelines of the World Bank-International Monetary Fund annual meetings in Washington.

Despite their common ground, however, Canada and Mexico are also at odds on some key issues.
