Police fear many casualties after vehicle bomb explodes outside a hotel on a busy junction in the centre of Somali capital.

A truck bomb exploded outside a hotel at a busy junction in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu on Saturday causing widespread devastation that left about 30 dead.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A huge explosion from a truck bomb killed 20 people in Somalia's capital, police said Saturday, as shaken residents called it the most powerful blast they'd heard in years.

Police now say the attacks have killed at least 30 people.

The attacks follows after political impasse between the Federal government of Somalia and its member states, in what many believe could have been foreign interest based political interference. The explosion reportedly happened near the entrance of the hotel.

Witnesses said the blast, which threw a thick cloud of smoke into the sky that could be seen across the city, badly damaged a nearby hotel and left scenes of devastation on the busy road.

Mulvaney: We'll Help Puerto Rico Rebuild; Must 'Fix Itself' From Debt
Fred Papali, a physician from Baltimore with family on the island, spent three days witnessing the dire situation in Puerto Rico. The president said the people of Puerto Rico were "very thankful" to his administration during his visit earlier on Tuesday.

"This was very terrible", witness Ismail Yusuf told AFP news agency.

He added there were bodies under the rubble.

Government security official Mohamed Aden said that bombing took place in a busy part of the city. "Two civilians were killed", Siyad Farah, a police major, told Reuters, adding that a suspect had been caught on suspicion of planting explosives.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but authorities have ideas on who it could be since they have carried out other attacks in the past.

No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though al Shabab, an offshoot of al Qaida, has carried out other auto bombings in the country in recent months.
