Government officials from Canada and Mexico slammed the Trump administration's proposals to renegotiate NAFTA in front of the top USA trade negotiator on Tuesday.

Among other demands, he also wants the trade agreement renogiated every five years to allow US companies access to independent arbitration if companies in another country violate the deal.

Canadian and Mexican officials have privately panned the so-called sunset provision, as has the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, whose leader called it a "poison pill" proposal that could undo NAFTA because it would insert uncertainty in a pact whose aim is partly to provide certainty in commerce.

"If they react negatively [to USA proposals], it may be enough for the U.S.to say, 'Enough, we're pulling out, '" said William Reinsch, a veteran Washington trade specialist who is a fellow at the Stimson Center think tank.

"Frankly, I am surprised and disappointed by the resistance to change from our negotiating partners on both fronts", he said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The Trudeau government promised to keep the management of the offer, arguing that the United States kept to their side several of the programs of support to their own farmers. President Donald Trump's musings about ending the accord have sparked public warnings from USA lawmakers and the private sector about the perils of dismantling a decades-long trade deal that has helped the region's trade balloon to $1.2 trillion annually.

The appeals court ruled that current USA law does not give judges the right to issue search warrants that reach outside the U.S. Officials obtained a search warrant, but Microsoft refused to turn over the information, taking the matter to court instead.

Mexico will host the fifth round of talks in November, and additional talks will be held next year. It governs how much of a vehicle has to be manufactured in North American to avoid import taxes in the three countries that make up NAFTA.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue said in a speech recently that the Trump administration's proposals are "unnecessary and unacceptable". The U.S. also proposed that half of the parts that come from North America must originate from the United States.

"We are opposed to country-specific required rules of origin", the Canadian source said.

Over the previous year, Mexico has aggressively pursued new or updated trade deals with other countries, seeking new markets for its exports and new partners for imports.

"If we do that it's a whole new ballgame going forward and I think there are ways to do that if we have something balanced", he said. Canada and Mexico won't stand for it.
