In a major India-policy speech on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had highlighted the need for collaborating with New Delhi on offering an alternative model of financing infrastructure projects and economic development to that of China whom he described as "predatory economics".

"We hope the USA side can look at China's development and role in the worldwide community in an objective way, and abandon its biased views of China", foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said during a regular press briefing.

Tillerson took a more strident tone on China. "We've also supported India's rise".

A senior State Department official defended the timing of the speech, saying Tillerson also said he wanted a constructive relationship with China. "But we will not shrink from China's challenges to the rules-based order, and where China subverts the sovereignty of neighboring countries, and disadvantages the USA and our friends". He contrasted their paths, though, saying China "has done so less responsibly, at times undermining the global, rules-based order - even as countries like India operate within a framework that protects other nations' sovereignty".

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's inaugural visit to South Asia next week will reaffirm the Donald Trump administration's comprehensive strategy toward the region, the State Department said on October 19. Earlier, responding a Business Recorder query in his weekly media briefing last week regarding the expected visit of US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defence, he stated: "I can not say when and who will be coming, but it was agreed [in the recent meetings between US and Pakistani authorities] that both sides will remain engaged at all levels". Asked about concerns Pakistan might have about a USA shift toward India, a senior State Department spokesman said a stronger US relationship with India does not come at the expense of Pakistan, and vice-versa.
