Microsoft Officially Kills Xbox's Kinect, Stops Manufacturing It

Microsoft Officially Kills the Kinect

It's demise was coming when it was reintroduced and bundled with the Xbox One.

The Kinect, with about 35 million units sold since its 2010 launch, is now officially dead.

Microsoft later reversed their decision and unbundled the camera from the Xbox One. In one particular case, it was revealed that the Kinect was involved in a GCHQ spying protocol that involved filtering through lots of sexually explicit imagery. The device did get a boost when it was packaged with the Xbox One at launch, but then Microsoft was forced to introduce a version of the console without the camera because of price and poor sales. Its core tech is being used in Microsoft Hololens, and it would find its home in other future products, meanwhile, the Kinect's team makes it better and better. Microsoft has confirmed that it's no longer manufacturing the device and the company won't sell anymore even if retailers run out, Fast Company reports.

In its later stages of life, Microsoft billed Kinect as a good way to broadcast video and sound over Skype and Twitch, but evidently this still couldn't justify its existence. More so when you consider than neither the Xbox One S or Xbox One X have ports for the Kinect, requiring users to spend for an additional accessory to use it.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Gets a Release Date, Collector's Edition, and Season Pass
As for multiplayer, up to eight players can go against each other, allowing for up to four fights to happen simultaneously. The FighterZ Pass will be included with the game's new digital special editions: FighterZ Edition and Ultimate Edition .

Pour one out for the Kinect!

Microsoft Kinect was first showcased at E3 2009 with a code-name "Project Natal". The Kinect also proved it is possible to have an affordable depth camera.

Do not mourn the loss of Kinect as its technology will continue to live on. Additionally the Windows Hello sign-in feature which has made its way to laptops and smartphones uses a rudimentary form of Kinect to detect people's faces. Apple's forthcoming iPhone X has virtually an entire Kinect built into it-courtesy of PrimeSense, the developer of Kinect, which Apple acquired in 2013.
