"The resignation of al-Hariri and his comments on Iran are a wake-up call to the global community to act against Iran, which is trying to turn Syria into a second Lebanon".

Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement, said on Sunday the previous day's resignation of the country's premier Saad Hariri had been "imposed" by Saudi Arabia.

"The resignation was a Saudi decision dictated to Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and was forced on him", Nasrallah said in a televised address.

On Saturday, the Saudi-funded Al Arabiya television said a plot to assassinate Hariri had been foiled.

"Do not listen to alarmist speeches", Nasrallah said.

Hariri was appointed prime minister in late 2016, leading a 30-member government that included Hezbollah.

The government was formed late last year in a political deal that ended years of deadlock, and last month it produced Lebanon's first budget since 2005.

Hezbollah was founded with Iranian support in 1982 to resist the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and has since emerged as a regional power in its own right. Hariri is Lebanon's most influential Sunni politician.

Along with Iran and Syria, the Lebanese terror group was responsible for the 2005 assassination of Hariri's father, former prime minister Rafik Hariri, which the younger Hariri cited in his resignation speech.

Manama has declared Hezbollah a terrorist group and repeatedly accused it of involvement in violent attacks in the kingdom.

But Nasrallah on Sunday called for "calm, patience and waiting until the reasons become clear" for Hariri stepping aside.

It remains unclear who will succeed Hariri as prime minister in Lebanon.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was concerned by Hariri's resignation and hoped all sides in the country would back its state institutions, his spokesman on Lebanon Stephane Dujarric said in an emailed statement.
