Sprint and T-Mobile Call Off Merger Talks

With T-Mobile Deal All But Dead, Softbank Looks To Charter

T-Mobile USA and Sprint today finally gave a definitive answer about whether they will merge.

"I'd just love them to sell it", one UK-based fund manager who holds Deutsche Telekom stock said last week as reports surfaced that the T-Mobile-Sprint talks were in trouble. One source stated that Claure was told neither Deutsche Telekom nor T-Mobile wants to lose the merger deal, and as a result Sprint's board held its own meeting yesterday.

Erik Gordon, a Ross School of Business professor at the University of MI says "Consumers are better off without the merger because Sprint and T-Mobile will continue to compete fiercely for budget-conscious customers,". With its hoard of 2.5GHz high-frequency spectrum, Sprint would have been a ideal fit for T-Mobile and its cache of low-frequency airwaves in the 600MHz-700MHz bands. Sprint has been struggling to stem the loss of subscribers.

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said that even though the companies could not reach a deal, "we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination".

Record-breaking Miller rounds off South Africa whitewash
In reply, a shell-shocked Bangladesh never attained any momentum as they were bundled out for 141 in 18.3 overs. Of that over, Miller said: "After four balls in that 19th over, I really thought I could do it [six sixes]".

While agreeing to the appealing nature of the merger, T-Mobile's chief executive officer John Legere reiterated that his company preferred a deal that would provide what he described as "superior long-term value for T-Mobile's shareholders".

Reports suggest that a major hurdle to the merger wasn't Sprint or T-Mobile directly, but rather the their ownership. Sprint's parent SoftBank almost acquired T-Mobile in 2014 but the deal fell through after US regulators expressed concerns. Both companies may have to sort that out sooner rather than later.

It comes as SoftBank said on Thursday it has secured a 2.65 trillion yen ($23.3 billion) senior loan agreement to refinance acquisition loans for Sprint Corp and British chip designer ARM.

It comes as Sprint has somewhat struggled in an increasingly competitive U.S. mobile market. It seemed this most recent deal was doomed to failure, as well. But President Donald Trump has also made populist comments on antitrust and prioritized job creation as a key platform.
