Rupert Murdoch contacted AT&T CEO twice about buying CNN

Rupert Murdoch 'interested in buying CNN' after reports Trump administration may force AT&T to sell it

The revelation of those comments came days after reports that the Department of Justice was pressuring Time Warner to sell CNN before approving the telecom giant's merger with AT&T.

"I didn't make that decision", Trump told reporters. "That was made by a man who is actually a very respected person, a very, very respected person".

According to the Post, the president was likely referring to the Justice Department's newly confirmed antitrust chief Makan Delrahim, who is overseeing the AT&T transaction - and who supported Trump in the campaign and served as a White House lawyer.

Earlier this week reports emerged that AT&T offered to divest just CNN but the US Justice Department rejected the offer, according to Reuters. CNN has become the focal point in antitrust approval of AT&T's $85.4 billion deal to buy Time Warner, hatched in October 2016. "We are prepared to litigate now", Stephenson told CNBC on the sidelines of the New York Times Dealbook conference. As a candidate, Donald Trump vowed to block the deal because it concentrated too much "power in the hands of too few". Another source said Murdoch had "zero interest" in owning CNN. "And likewise I have never offered to sell CNN", he said, adding that there was "absolutely no intention" that the company would sell the network. "So we'll see - that probably ends up being litigation maybe not, we'll see how it all plays out".

Delrahim said he had not had any contact with the White House or the attorney general on the matter, speaking at an event at the USC Gould School of Law in Los Angeles later in the day. Those remarks put AT&T and DOJ on a collision course, policy analysts said, which may lead to DOJ suing to block the deal. "But I do believe you should have as many news outlets as you can".

Kushner told Time Warner executive Gary Ginsberg that CNN should fire the employees because they were so wrong in their analysis of how the election would turn out, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
