Legionnaires' disease outbreak at Disneyland sickens nine visitors

The famous theme park took action after it was discovered that high levels of bacteria that can cause Legionnaires' Disease were in the towers.

The county health agency alerted health care providers to keep an eye on anyone who visited Anaheim or Disneyland and contracted Legionnaires' disease before November 7.

Legionnaires' disease appear to be on the rise, with Orange County reporting more than 55 cases this year.

The victims were aged between 52 and 94.

One individual, who did not visit the park, died from the disease although they were already suffering from other health issues.

Disneyland shut down two bacteria-contaminated cooling towers after the cases of the disease were reported.

The 44-year-old also got married to her son in 2008 in Comanche County, however he filed for an annulment after 15 months. The two eventually married, but when the family returned to Oklahoma, everyone learned the truth: that they were related.

Nine of the visitors had visited Disneyland Park in September before developing the illness, according to the paper, citing the Orange County Health Care Agency.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella bacteria that grows in water, and it can spread when small droplets get into the air, according to the CDC.

One of the three cases not linked to Disneyland was fatal, the agency said. In a statement, Dr. Pamela Hymel, chief medical officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said Disneyland learned about the Legionnaires' cases on October 27. But in large concentrations, often due to stagnant or improperly sanitized water systems, the bacteria can be transmitted through inhaling contaminated water vapor.

The towers are near the New Orleans Square Train Station, more than 100 feet away from parts of the theme park accessible to guests, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman said Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported. Soon after, an order was issued by the health agency requiring preventing Disney from reopening the towers before health officials verified that they were free from Legionella contamination. Those towers were chemically treated and shut down to eliminate further infection. While many people have no symptoms, it can cause serious pneumonia and prove unsafe to those with lung or immune system problems.

The disease can be treated with antibiotics.
