However, court documents related to Papadopoulos' guilty plea showed that the former adviser offered to set up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a campaign meeting in 2016, which Sessions attended.

The question stemmed from news Monday night that Sessions had asked senior aides to determine if the department should probe an Obama administration decision that allowed Russian Federation to acquire a financial interest in USA uranium supplies. In that written statement, the former Trump campaign national security adviser claimed that he had told Sessions about "connections" he had that "could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin" in March of previous year.

However, Sessions said he would not acknowledge if he will recuse himself from any probe regarding Clinton, despite earlier pledges to do just that given his high-profile role in the Trump campaign.

The comment by Sessions to a House of Representatives panel did not reveal any new link between the Trump team and Russian Federation but it was another example of the top USA law enforcement official offering a different version of events as lawmakers try to work out if the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation in the 2016 election. Sessions would not say whether the dossier was used by the FBI to obtain warrants to surveil Trump associates, nor would he comment on any hypothetical investigation into Justice Department leaks to the media about the dossier.

Sessions faced tough questioning from committee Democrats on Tuesday. That letter informed members that federal prosecutors are looking into whether a special counsel should be appointed to investigate Hillary Clinton.

"I have been asked to remember details from a year ago, such as who I saw on what day, in what meeting, and who said what when", he added.

The hearing comes after a year where Sessions has been under repeated pressure from the President to launch investigations into Clinton and has been under fire from congressional Democrats about his answers on Russian Federation and push end the DACA program for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, among other issues.

During the March 2016 campaign meeting where Russia was discussed, Sessions shut down Papadopoulos' idea of engaging with Russian contacts, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Some Democrats have suggested that Sessions's multiple false statements to Congress this year were conscious lies. "I have always told the truth, and I have answered every question as I understood them and to the best of my recollection, as I will continue to do today ..."

"I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath".

Democrats say that five congressional committees have looked into the uranium sale and found nothing improper.
