Fabrizio Ravanelli said he would "bend over backward" to reappoint former Italy head coach Antonio Conte following Gian Piero Ventura's sacking. An FIGC source, however, told Reuters that the 69-year-old had been fired.

Italy faced Sweden in a two-legged World Cup qualification play-off and ultimately fell short of expectations, losing 1-0 on aggregate thanks to the first-leg defeat in Sweden.

The FIGC said it will consider "important names" to replace Ventura and former Italy worldwide Ravanelli insisted the country must turn to Chelsea's Conte, who left the role past year having reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio later told reporters that he had spoken to Ventura and "told him we no longer had need of his services, so as of today, Italy does not have a coach".

"The federation president (Tavecchio) informed participants at the (crisis) meeting. of the impossibility for him to resign", a FIGC statement read.

Obama's successor Trump decertified the deal last month and slapped sanctions on Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards. Tehran says it has no plans to build nuclear-capable missiles and the missile programme is for defence purposes.

On Tuesday, Tavecchio said he was calling a meeting for Wednesday to put together "an in-depth analysis and decide on choices for the future". In August, it was extended until the Euro 2020 tournament because the FIGC said it was happy with the team's progress.

Italy legend Dino Zoff is critical of coach Giampiero Ventura over the Azzurri's World Cup failure.

Over 17 matches, Ventura posted 10 wins, four draws and three defeats, the most critical the 1-0 loss to Sweden in Solna on Friday night.

It was a debut goal for his country but more importantly it condemned Italy to be unseeded for the 2018 World Cup qualifying draw.
