Its members have committed to phasing out coal-burning power plants, supporting clean energy and encouraging carbon capture technology.

A source close to the matter said signatories to the alliance so far had been at least a dozen, in addition to some USA states, Canadian provinces and businesses.

Since signing the Paris Agreement in 2015, which aims to wean the world off fossil fuels, several countries have made national plans to phase out coal from their power supply mix.

The alliance, which is not legally binding, aims to have at least 50 members by the next United Nations climate summit in 2018 to be held in Poland's Katowice, one of Europe's most polluted cities.

Speaking at the annual United Nations climate conference in Bonn, she said Mr Trump should study how Britain and other countries had sharply reduced coal burning while expanding their economies and creating jobs. "Coal is literally choking our cities, with close to a million people dying every year from coal pollution".

"Air pollution from coal has awful consequences for health", she adds.

CEO Hock Tan last week, saying the company is likely to relocate its headquarters from Singapore to the United States. Still, analysts expect Qualcomm management to reject the $70-per-share price Broadcom is offering as too low.

Even Germany and Poland, hosts of climate talks this year and next, are holding onto coal for the foreseeable future.

The pace of Germany's exit from coal power has dominated talks in Berlin this week on forming a new German government. The federal government has announced it is working with the United Kingdom on a global alliance to give the fossil fuel the boot.

"We know that the Paris Agreement is a start", Merkel said in a speech in the German city of Bonn where nearly 200 countries are seeking to bolster the global climate accord.

In it, Francis called climate change "one of the most worrisome phenomena that humanity is facing".

"We would strongly urge you to sign or endorse the declaration of the global alliance to Power Past Coal", they said.

McKenna says the alliance will see governments helping other governments make the positive change.
