President Donald Trump denounced what he called a "horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshippers in Egypt".

Islamist militants are suspected of orchestrating the attack on a mosque in Egypt's volatile Sinai Peninsula on Friday, killing at least 85 people and injuring at least 80 others, Egyptian media reported.

In a statement afterward, el-Sissi said the attack "will not go unpunished" and that Egypt will persevere with its war on terrorism.

In July this year, at least 23 soldiers were killed when suicide vehicle bombs hit two military checkpoints in the Sinai, in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

After a mosque in Egypt's north Sinai region was attacked on Friday, claiming at least 235 lives, leaders around the globe showered their condolence messages to the families of the victims, asking everyone to stand against the rising terrorism. Attacks on mosques are rare in Egypt, where the majority of the 95 million population is Muslim.

Such an evil and cowardly terrorist attack on worshipers in Egypt. Around 40 gunmen set up positions outside the mosque with jeeps and opened fire from different directions as people tried to escape.

Eyewitnesses reported ambulances ferrying casualties from the scene to nearby hospitals after the attack on Al Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, 40 kilometres from the North Sinai provincial capital of el-Arish. Islamic militants, including the local affiliate of the Islamic State group, consider Sufis heretics due to their less literal interpretations of the faith.

The jihadists have also attacked local tribes and their militias, branding them traitors for working with the army and police.

The White House also said in a statement that "the worldwide community must continue to strengthen its efforts to defeat terrorist groups that threaten the United States and our partners and we must collectively discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence".

Security has always been one of the key sources of public support for the former general, who is expected to run for re-election for another four-year term early next year.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Egypt.
