The announcement comes days after the Madras High Court directed EC to hold by-election by December 31.

By-elections to five state Assembly seats, including Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar (RK Nagar) Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, will be held on December 21, the Election Commission announced here on Friday.

Assembly bye-election are going to be held in various parts of the country on December 21, including RK Nagar in Tamil Nadu, Sikandra in Uttar Pradesh, Sabang in West Bengal, and Pakke-Kasang and Likabali in Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the EC, the last date for filing of nomination is December 4, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 7 and counting of votes will be on December 24.

The RK Nagar seat fell vacant after the death of former Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa past year.

"Our candidate is in the fray with the support of our allies". Ganesh was the party's candidate for the April 2017 by-election from RK Nagar which was rescinded by the EC following reports of large scale money distribution by then AIADMK (Amma) candidate TTV Dinakaran and his associates.

The Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Tamilisai Soundararajan said a decision to contest or not will be taken after consultations within the party. It has to be seen whether she would contest this time.
