A number of flights across the United Kingdom have been cancelled today as a result of the heavy snow felt across much of the United Kingdom this weekend.

Four British Airways flights headed for Heathrow had to be diverted to Newcastle, 300 miles away.

Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport have not cancelled any flights but said they are subject to delays.

British Airways was worst affected, with 24 long-haul departures cancelled as well as dozens of short-haul flights.

But as a hub airport, delays have a knock-on effect across Europe, with reports of one flight from Berlin to Heathrow being forced to turn back after an hour.

Significant build-ups have been also reported in Leicestershire, Worcestershire and Bedfordshire, while snow has been falling heavily in Birmingham city centre.

Undocumented immigrant acquitted in shooting that sparked sanctuary-city debate
The illegal immigrant who shot Kate Steinle has been found not guilty on all but one charge involving possession of a weapon. The bullet, shot from a stolen gun, ricocheted off the concrete before striking Steinle.

In a statement today, British Airways said: " Heathrow is continuing to experience severe adverse weather conditions.

Heathrow Airport also stated: "Some flights at Heathrow will be disrupted today due to crew and aircraft being out of position following yesterday's weather".

"We're very sorry that some of our customers" travel plans have been affected by heavy snowfall being experienced across the United Kingdom and Europe, ' a British Airways spokesman said. Heavy rain overnight and snowfall this morning, combined with a reduction in the number of flights able to land at Heathrow have caused disruption to our flight schedule. However, we regret that weather conditions across the United Kingdom are resulting in some passengers experiencing disruption to their travel arrangements.

Flights to Aberdeen have also faced significant delays as a result of the weather.

"Our main priorities are to run what services we can safely and make preparations to protect the start of commuter services on Monday morning".

At least 50,000 passengers were forced to wait for the recovery of worldwide air traffic departures as well as inbound flights, Sputnik reported, citing The Independent.
