Damian Green resigns as first secretary of state after porn allegations

Theresa May's effective deputy Damian Green quits over pornography cover-up

British Prime Minister Theresa May forced her most senior minister, Damian Green, to resign for lying about whether he knew pornography had been found on computers in his parliamentary office.

Green, who voted to stay in the European Union, was appointed as first secretary of state just six months ago in a bid to shore up May's premiership following her disastrous bet on a June snap election that lost her party its majority in parliament.

The report said it was not possible to reach a definitive conclusion on the appropriateness of Green's behaviour in this instance, though the investigation found allegations to be plausible.

The Prime Minister, speaking during a visit to Poland, said she shared concerns about the way details of a 2008 police inquiry into Home Office leaks had entered the public domain.

Mr Green's sacking follows the November resignations of Sir Michael Fallon as defence secretary, amid Westminster sleaze allegations, and worldwide development secretary Priti Patel over undisclosed meetings in Israel. In response, Green said the story was untrue.

Green thanked his supporters in a Tweet today, saying he was "overwhelmed" by the number of messages from friends, colleagues and constituents.

Sepoy Pargat Singh (30) belonged to Karnal district in Haryana and is survived by wife Ramanpreet Kaur and a son, the Army said. Major Moharkar Pra-fulla Ambadas, 32, belong-ed to district Bhandara of Maharashtra and is survived by his wife Avoli Moharkar.

"It is therefore with deep regret, and enduring gratitude for the contribution you have made over many years, that I asked you to resign from the government and have accepted your resignation", she said.

Earlier in the day, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt had said it was clear the Prime Minister acted with a "very heavy heart" when she ordered Mr Green to tender his resignation after summoning him to No 10 on Wednesday evening. "Clearly he did something that was a breach of the ministerial code and that's why Theresa May took the decision that she did".

Green has denied this claim as well.

Green lost his job at the top of government after he was found to have made "misleading" statements about allegations that police found pornography on computers in his parliamentary office in 2008.

He continued: "I deeply regret the distress caused to Kate Maltby following her article about me and the reaction to it".
