The ordinance approved last year by the Miami Beach City Commission set a minimum wage of $10.31 an hour to take effect in 2018, with the wage going up $1 a year to $13.31 on January 1, 2021.

As of December 31, minimum wage in Upstate New York has increased to $10.40 per hour (not including Westchester, Suffolk, Nassau Counties, and New York City), and $11.75 for fast food workers outside of New York City. Block says MI has the highest state minimum wage in the region.

"I'm very concerned raising the cost of entry-level jobs will highlight the differences in cost between doing business in NY versus other states", Goodell said on Friday. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state.

The liberal-leaning Cleveland think tank estimates another 478,000 workers who earn a little more than minimum wage will likely get a bump in pay because employers will adjust their pay scales to reflect the higher state rate. Each year, the wage is to increase with a rate of inflation.

Whether it's five cents, as in 2017 or the fifteen cents for 2018, minimum wage workers will use what they can make to help them in their quest for making a decent living.
