Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whose administration struck the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, campaigned on freeing the men, though they remain detained.

Hundreds of people have been arrested.

According to Al Jazeera, some Iranian Telegram users said on Sunday they could not access the messaging app through cell phone service, and that they could through Wifi and home internet connections.

The state TV report said 10 were killed during clashes Sunday night, without elaborating.

Reuters reported that footage on social media showed riot police clubbing and arresting the demonstrators, and said protesters were also arrested elsewhere in Tehran.

Two demonstrators were killed during a protest in western Iran late Saturday.

Hedayatollah Khademi, a lawmaker in Izeh, told the Iranian Labour News Agency (Ilna) that a number of people had been wounded as well as the two killed overnight in the city.

Sunday was the fourth day of protests in Iran that reportedly started against rising food and gasoline prices, according to CNN.

"We have no information yet whether it was protesters or the police that fired yesterday [Sunday] and the issue is under investigation", the report quoted him as saying. Correspondents say it would be a significant escalation were they to become officially involved in policing the protests.

"Some armed protesters tried to take over some police stations and military bases but faced serious resistance from security forces", state TV reported.

On Twitter, President Trump has sought to portray the unrest as the direct result of "Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism overseas". He stressed that people have the right to express their discontent with the authorities, but called for calm and restraint. A videos posted on social media appeared to show two young Iranian protesters lying motionless on the ground and covered with blood and a voiceover said they had been shot dead by the SSF.
