Hoda Kotb joins Savannah Guthrie as the co-anchor on the'TODAY show

News opened the new year by appointing Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of the "Today" show's first two hours with Savannah Guthrie, replacing Matt Lauer following his firing on sexual misconduct charges in late November.

In an email announcing Kotb's new role, NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack stated that Kotb has "seamlessly stepped" into the co-anchor position, which she filled temporarily after Matt Lauer was sacked in November amid accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

"I am pinching myself", said a beaming Kotb, sitting beside her.

The pairing of two women is a departure from the typical man-and-woman morning show format.

NBC News chairman Andy Lack announced Kotb's promotion in a memo to staff on Tuesday (02Jan18). She also hosts "The Hoda Show on SiriusXM".

Kotb, 53, will serve as co-anchor during the first two hours of the show, beginning at 7 a.m., and continue to appear on the fourth hour alongside Kathy Lee Gifford.

"Over the past several weeks, Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running", Lack wrote.

Kane said it had been a "fantastic" year. "We have finished this year in a very good way and I hope next year we can win more".

Guthrie has co-anchored the program since 2012.

Speaking to PEOPLE about that day now, Guthrie said she and Kotb "were in it together" and added, "We are family, and families do go through hard times, and when that happens in good families, you just get closer". "I think that we should send some medics to Alexandria, Va., where my mom has likely fainted". "They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of 'TODAY'".

Kotb was assigned to host with Guthrie on the morning that Lauer's firing was announced.

The addition marks the first time a pair of women will be anchoring the program, according to NBC News.

"He texted me and he said congratulations and some really nice words, and it meant the world when I saw the text pop up", Kotb told Entertainment Tonight.

Multiple women have since come forward to accuse Lauer of sexual misconduct as well. "This is working, it feels good, '" she said.
