Apple Releases iOS 11.2.2 To Deal With Spectre Vulnerability

1. Update your Windows PC

Apple has released three new security updates aimed at protecting Safari and WebKit from the Spectre attack.

This is not the first time that Apple has addressed the issue.

Meanwhile, Mac users can now install macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 for the same Safari fixes for laptops and desktops.

For those technically minded, you can review the details of the security flaw that effects nearly all modern processors, over at Google's Project Zero blog.

The patches mitigate two security bugs (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715) collectively referred to as Spectre. Since exploiting many of these issues requires a malicious app to be loaded on your Mac or iOS device, we recommend downloading software only from trusted sources such as the App Store.

Work continues on mitigating the impact of the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, including adding protections against JavaScript exploitation to web browsers.

Both flaws affect something called "speculative execution" in modern computer chips, but they can be abused in different ways. Apple will release an update for Safari on macOS and iOS in the coming days to mitigate these exploit techniques.

It's the second round of such updates from Apple, which confirmed on Thursday that all devices running iOS and macOS were affected.

Google also released mitigations for its many of products, and said a fix for its Chrome browser will be available later this month. There are reports the Microsoft fix (Security Update for Windows KB4056892) bricks some AMD systems.

Analysis of these techniques revealed that while they are extremely hard to exploit, even by an app running locally on a Mac or iOS device, they can be potentially exploited in JavaScript running in a web browser.
