Vote to Reauthorize Warrantless Surveillance a Blow to Free Expression

At Reason, Scott Shackford wrote that "it also codifies permission for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to access and use data secretly collected by Americans for a host of criminal cases that have nothing to do with protecting America from foreign threats".

Snowden's leaks in 2013 spurred a heated debate over governments' warrantless surveillance.

The U.S. House on Thursday passed legislation reauthorizing a surveillance act after President Donald Trump first criticized the bill, and then backed it.

In his second tweet Trump seemed to backtrack, pushing for the act to be re-upped.

A weekly recap of the top political stories from The Globe, sent right to your email. GOP leaders had shown some concern over the past few weeks that the FISA measure would have some trouble, particularly because they were relying on some Democratic votes to get the bill over the finish line, but ultimately they had more than enough support.

But the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act's authorities also sweep up the communications of Americans, prompting concerns from privacy advocates ahead of the act's looming January 19 expiration.

The amendment failed by a vote of 183 to 233. It would require investigators to get a warrant to look at Americans' information, but only after the government has started an investigation. That was after Trump tweeted later this morning, this time supporting the bill.

Here's a White House statement from last night, opposing an amendment that would restrict intelligence surveillance under FISA.

That's the section of the law the House voted today to extend-it's set to expire next Friday, and the Trump administration has argued that renewing it is critical to national security.

It is unclear what the dossier has to do with unmasking or the reauthorization of the spying programme, but Trump has been repeatedly denouncing it in recent days.

"I think [House Republicans] just needed more clarification".

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump spoke following his first tweet on FISA, according to a source familiar.

The US House of Representatives has voted to extend by another six years the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance programme - allowing spying on both Americans and foreigners to continue. Later Thursday morning, he posted a follow-up tweet clarifying that he has sought changes to the law and voicing support for the surveillance program.

"No president should have this power". He added that Trump's "woes" began with surveillance.

Nearly two hours later, another tweet was sent from Trump's account, saying this vote was about "foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land".
