That brings the number of flu deaths so far this season to 10.

The flu is raging on in IN, with the number of flu deaths rising to 79, up from 50 a week earlier, state health officials said Friday.

In Dallas County, which has a more extensive reporting system, there have been 38 flu-related deaths this year.

Influenza, aka the flu, is a respiratory illness that causes mild to severe illness and can lead to death.

Of those 50 deaths, 36 were people older than 65. She also said even though this year's flu shot is only 30 percent effective, it will provide some protection, so she said it is never too late to get a flu shot.

Within the last week, three people have died from the flu.

"We are marshaling all the resources we have, including accessory staff and alternative areas of the hospital, to house the sickest of the sick", he said. "The increased deaths worry us, but it's not unusual compared to other seasons when we've seen the same thing from influenza".

The figures also reveal that the number of detections of influenza on hospital wards across the north has decreased from 274 in week one to 237 in week two.

In the past week, however, there has been a slight decrease in the number of people seeking treatment and getting tested for influenza, indicating the H3N2 strain may have peaked. As of today, 1,148 people have tested positive. They are expected to remain in place through the end of the flu season, which typically is March 31. There have been more than 300 hospitalizations this season.

With time still left in the flu season doctors are still encouraging you to get the flu shot.
