Access to Mount Rainier National Park will be free during the government shutdown, but the experience will be different than usual inside the park, said acting superintendent Tracy Swartout.

"We fully expect the government to remain open, however in the event of a shutdown, national parks will remain as accessible as possible", a spokesman for the National Parks Service said. Due to their proximity to Concession operated facilities, the restrooms at Upper Pines Campground and Camp 4 will be open.

Staffing and services at Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, and Big Cypress National Preserve are limited as a result.

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Yosemite National Park in California were open, but few Park Service staff were available to help visitors.

"Because of the government shutdown, that had to be closed today, so the information could not be provided by the rangers", he added.

At the Carbon River Entrance, visitors can still access the trails that start in that corner of the park. The park's website said winter lectures, winter reading adventures, the battlefield book series and Jared Frederick's book signing were canceled.

The public affairs office will be closed until the government reopens.

"As a country we can do better, so I hope that we can get the government up an running again and that folks can get back to work as soon as possible", said Jake Cohen, visitor.

Access is not restricted on U.S. Forest Service land, but services will be unavailable.
