Sinn Fein's deputy leader Mary Lou Mc Donald will succeed Gerry Adams as the leader of the party. The party's deputy leader was the only candidate to succeed Mr Adams when nominations closed this morning ahead of the special party election come February

Mary Lou McDonald has been confirmed as the sole candidate in the race to succeed Sinn Fein party president Gerry Adams.

Adams has been leader of Sinn Féin since 1983 with McDonald being deputy leader of the party since 2009.

Nominations for the position closed last night and Mary Lou was the only Sinn Fein party member put forward as a candidate to become the new leader when Adams steps down after 30 years at the helm.

McDonald continued; "The truth is, many friends have correctly said to me that I have big shoes to fill, but the truth is no one will ever fill Gerry Adams' shoes". "I won't fill Gerry's shoes - the news is I've brought my own".

She will be the party's first female leader and faces mounting challenges on Brexit and restoring power-sharing to Stormont after a year of political deadlock. The 69-year-old is a key figure in the Irish republican movement, which seeks to take Northern Ireland out of the U.K. and unite it with the Republic of Ireland.

Conflict among world powers a growing concern, experts say
Aside from suffering disruptions, organisations have also suffered huge losses as a result of persistent cyber attacks. Overall, 59% of the respondents expect risks to intensify, compared to only 7% who believe that risks will decline.

"Politics in this state are very polarised at this time and the atmosphere is very toxic".

Speaking at Sinn Fein's ard comhairle (high council) on Saturday, the outgoing party leader said there will always be "political tension between unionism and republicanism", but that it should be managed in a "responsible, respectful way".

"We have to challenge ourselves and our support base". "Leadership means knowing when it is time for change and that time is now", said the 69-year-old Adams at the time.

A fourth attempt to end the impasse is due to begin on Wednesday.

She also said: "I believe we are capable of achieving anything that we set our minds to".
