Microsoft moves to block Intel's Spectre patch

Intel asking everyone to skip its flawed firmware updates was apparently not enough for Microsoft.

According to Jake Williams, head of security at Rendition Infosec, it's likely that the Chinese government had the information about the flaws from the Intel since most Chinese companies keep abreast with the trends in the communications. It is unlikely anything terrible has happened on a widespread basis because of this flaw and the playing field is now level again; however this remains a great example of how not to deal with the discovery of a major architectural flaw which continues to cause grave security concerns globally.

While the Spectre Variant 2 vulnerability has the potential to cause some damage if exploited by enterprising hackers, there are now no known reports of any users impacted by the attack. Some of the companies Intel notified included Chinese technology companies, though the report suggests there is no evidence that any information was misused.

The suits allege Intel failed to fix the security flaws and failed to disclose the vulnerabilities in a timely fashion, and want compensation for the resulting slowed device performance anticipated in many devices.

The Journal has reported that the company notified some of its customers about the security flaws found in its processors, named Spectre and Meltdown.

Further fallout could likely be in relation to reports that Intel CEO Brian Krzanich sold millions of dollars' worth of personal stock before the public was made aware of the vulnerabilities, and that Intel notified a select group of customers, including Chinese tech firms, about the bugs before informing USA officials. We all know the answer here is Microsoft when in reality, it's Intel's fault but to the average user, Microsoft will always be the culprit.

The company has earlier advised OEMs and users to hold off on the new patch that Intel issues themselves after systems went down after rebooting. Microsoft added that the fixes are creating stability issues and random reboots that could lead to data loss. "In the *big* picture, 4.15 looks perfectly normal, with two thirds of the full 4.15 patch being about drivers. not by CPU bug mitigation". The date of the planned announcement, however, came months after a member of Google's Project Zero security team first detected the flaws in June of a year ago - a delay that would allow the companies to come up with a fix to such flaws. It was a very delicate situation to find out whom and when to inform in order to ensure that flaws gets resolved without the information becoming prevalent so customers do not feel more cautious.
