Katie Stephens and Eddie Zytner, 22 and 25 respectively, are a couple from Canada who chose to have a little week-long holiday in the Dominican Republic.

At first the pair assumed it must be sand fleas, which they had been warned about.

At the end of Sunday, Stephens said she started to see her feet swollen.

The majority of the symptoms began when they left Punta Cana.

Bring a little bit anxious - as they should have been, considering those pictures, they went to seek medical attention, but it was only the third doctor that had any idea what was wrong with them, thanks to previous patient having contracted hookworms - or larva migrans - from a beach in Thailand.

One of the most common way of contracting them is by walking barefoot in warm climates where sanitation is poor.

But a doctor who possessed a dual-nation licence helped Zytner and Stephens to get the required medications in the United States, the website reported. Newsweek has contacted the resort for comment; an unnamed official told the Star that there had been no other similar complaints.

However, Canada's national public health department, Health Canada, denied the medication request as it is not licensed in Canada.

Unfortunately for the couple, they ran into a problem.

The third physician managed to make the right call and told the couple that they'd contracted a hookworm infection.

To have permission, the doctor sent Health Canada a request for the medicine. The couple shared what they had faced after returning from the vacations and the outcomes are actually bad to see. However, the news they got on Tuesday was not as they expected. Her mother had to drive to Detroit to get the medication in America for the couple, Fox News reported. "At that point, that's when we freaked out a little", she said. She paid CAD$88 and returned to deliver it to her son and his girlfriend.

The couple, who are now on medication (a drug called ivermectin) and walking on crutches, have said they've seen an improvement since their treatment began.

"Good hygiene standards and effective sewage disposal systems are the reason hookworm infections aren't commonly seen in developed countries such as the United Kingdom, although they may still be a problem in some Mediterranean countries".

Their feet are now improving, but they still have a ways to go to fix the damage to their skin. Then, he added that he still had to change the bandages again, and considered it was "another chance" to look how their feet were "progressing".

For a lot of our trip, we found that we were scratching our feet quite a bit.

To inform their friends and any other person who wants to travel or go to the beach, the couple uploaded photos on their Facebook profiles showing what the parasite made to their feet.
