GeekWire: Amazon releases Super Bowl ad, Alexa loses voice

Amazon Alexa Can Now Send Text Messages to Any Number in the US

If the person you are texting lacks the app, it will then be sent as an SMS.

To date, messaging with Alexa has meant sending screeds using Amazon's in-house system, which doesn't do you much good if your recipient doesn't have an Echo speaker.

The smart speaker market is booming with estimates pegging usage in America at about 39 million users combined for the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Amazon announced a new service that lets you send SMS messages from your Alexa-enabled Echo speakers, according to TechCrunch.

Though it's just a small taste of what's ahead for Alexa, we do get a feeling of what her new voice will sound like.

Waymo Will get Able to Deploy Hundreds of Self-Driving Minivans
They have introduced an offer that allows the first users to be part of the early rider program of Waymo . Fewer than a third (28%) of drivers would trust a self-driving vehicle, according to the survey.

Alexa devices gain SMS functionality in the latest update. You just need to turn this feature on, open the Alexa app on your smartphone and then go the Conversations tab. Recently Amazon added a feature that allows you to call handsfree, and this time they have added an SMS option. The feature is limited to the United States for now, and only works on Android devices - the company doesn't plan to add iOS support because of the restrictions Apple places on its messaging API for third parties.

Except not quite everyone else, at the moment, because SMS message receipt only works for Android phones. Firstly the SMS feature needs to be toggled on.

It may seem odd to say that a few days after Apple formally outlined plans for the upcoming availability of its HomePod product, potentially a new major competitive force in the market, but Google certainly has a head start.

Users who want to disable SMS features can do so by going to their contact card in the Alexa app and toggling it off.
