Saudi Coalition Under Pressure as Yemeni Allies Turn on Each Other

In 2014, Houthi groups overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa, forcing Yemen's Saudi-backed government to set up an interim capital in Aden.

"The Transitional Council now controls the whole city of Aden practically, with the exception of the palace of Al-Maashiq [the presidential palace], which is the 'red line, '" the source said. The official declined to say whether the prime minister was to leave Aden.

"What a farce", Mukhtar al-Rahbi, an official in Yemen's government, said. Hadi, who has been living in Saudi Arabia for most of the war, rejected the ultimatum, describing the separatists' actions as a "coup".

Turkey on Monday said they are "concerned" about clashes between government forces and southern separatists in Yemen's coastal city of Aden.

Fighting broke out when Hadi ignored separatists' demands to fire Prime Minister Ahmed Obaid bin Dagher, accusing him of corruption.

Four people were killed on Monday in a second day of fighting between rival factions seeking control of the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, where the internationally recognised administration is based, witnesses and officials said.

Violence reportedly erupted on Sunday after forces loyal to the STC seized the government's headquarters in the coastal city.

"The fighting in Aden makes it impossible for us to carry out our lifesaving work", Tamer Kirolos, the director of Save the Children's operations in Yemen, said in a statement.

The Saudi-led coalition, which intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015 to restore President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi's government from the Iran-backed Houthis, called on both parties to cease hostilities.

The warring parties have been locked in a bloody stalemate for most of the last three years.

The cabinet also stressed the need to finish the liberation of all Yemeni territories, defeat Iran's Houthi militias, and avoid any reasons that may lead to division and undermining the State's institutions in Yemen.

Yemen was unified militarily in 1990 after a protracted war, but an active secessionist movement remained in and around Aden ever since, and they appear to have finally found an opening to reassert themselves.
