A Pakistani terrorist Naveed, who escaped from Srinagar Hospital on Tuesday (February 6).

The Pakistan-based group is active in Indian Kashmir, regularly staging armed assaults on the roughly half a million Indian soldiers deployed in the divided Himalayan territory.

The attack by the LeT to free "hardcore" LeT terrorist Mohammed Naveed Jhatt took place around 11.35 am inside the busy SMHS hospital complex in a high security area of Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital. "He was involved in the killings of policemen, and there were various cases against him", Jammu and Kashmir DGP Shesh Paul Vaid told ThePrint. At the time of his arrest, he was the district commander of LeT in Shopian.

Since his arrest, termed a "major" breakthrough, he had been lodged in Srinagar's Rainawari jail. Their firing resulted in the death of two policemen.

Near OPD of the hospital Naveed started scuffle with the police team escorting him, suddenly two person appeared on the scene. When the J&K police insisted that he be shifted to the Jammu jail, he moved a petition from a city court and he got a stay on the order of the DG Prisons on December 26, 2017. The Pakistani terrorist escaped after he succeeded in snatching a rifle from the security personnel who was taking him to the hospital.

He was supported by the lone CPI (M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, who also termed the attack as a "serious security lapse". Naveed had also killed an assistant sub-inspector in Pulwama, said sources.

A Lashkar-e-Taiba militant escaped on Tuesday from a hospital in Srinagar where he was taken for a medical check-up.

According to witnesses at the hospital Tuesday, the police party was sacked upon from inside the hospital as they approached the door of OPD Block A at around 11 am.

"We are questioning some policemen and prisoners in the Central Jail to know whether there was some inside help to the militants in the attack", he said. Later, Srinagar DIG Ghulam Hassan Bhat refuted these rumours, underlining that the shots were fired by an external group of militants.
