Pistons get help at guard in deal with Bulls for Nelson

The Pistons weren't going to stand pat ahead of the trade deadline. Nelson was a member of the 2009 Orlando Magic team with Dwight Howard that Stan Van Gundy coached to an NBA Finals appearance. The six-foot, 190-pound Nelson had not played a game with Chicago since being acquired from the New Orleans Pelicans on February 1st as part of the deal for Nikola Mirotic.

The Detroit Pistons announced Thursday that the team has acquired guard Jameer Nelson from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for center Willie Reed and future second-round draft considerations.

Like they did with Nelson, the Bulls are still trying to move Tony Allen - also acquired in the Mirotic deal - or could simply waive him when the deadline passes at 2 p.m.

The 6-foot-7 Ennis has averaged 6.9 points in 45 games this season. Reggie Jackson has been recovering from an injured ankle, leaving Ish Smith as the starter in that spot. That much was clear the moment they traded for Blake Griffin on January 29 and embarked on their current five-game win streak. If Reed signs elsewhere as a free agent, he's facing a potential six-game suspension stemming from a domestic violence incident last August.

Reed, acquired last week from the Los Angeles Clippers in the Blake Griffin trade, on Wednesday began serving a six-game National Basketball Association suspension for a domestic violence incident in August.

Meanwhile, Chicago will have to improve past Detroit by 2022 for the pick swap to have any value. The Pistons have effectively made Griffin their backup center since the trade, using him and Anthony Tolliver together when Andre Drummond is on the bench. Now he flipped the other piece of that trade Brice Johnson for Memphis Grizzly James Ennis.
